{"id":12958,"date":"2021-04-14T10:52:25","date_gmt":"2021-04-14T15:52:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/45.33.92.219\/?p=12958"},"modified":"2021-04-14T10:52:25","modified_gmt":"2021-04-14T15:52:25","slug":"cybersecurity-one-in-three-attacks-are-coronavirus-related","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/claritytg.com\/index.php\/2021\/04\/14\/cybersecurity-one-in-three-attacks-are-coronavirus-related\/","title":{"rendered":"Cybersecurity: One In Three Attacks Are Coronavirus-Related"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">Cybersecurity: One In Three Attacks Are Coronavirus-Related<\/h5>\n<p><strong>By: Danny Palmer of ZDNet<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>The NCSC annual review says the agency is putting more effort into protecting healthcare.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/video\/ransomware-and-hospitals-why-cyber-criminals-are-targeting-healthcare-during-coronavirus-and-how-to-stop-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/video\/ransomware-and-hospitals-why-cyber-criminals-are-targeting-healthcare-during-coronavirus-and-how-to-stop-them\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The UK&#8217;s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is stepping up support for the National Health Service to help protect UK hospitals and other healthcare organizations against cyberattacks.<\/p>\n<p>The\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsc.gov.uk\/news\/annual-review-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NCSC&#8217;s Annual Review 2020<\/a>\u202freveals that the cyber arm of GCHQ has handled more than 200 cyber incidents related to coronavirus during the course of this year \u2013 almost a third of the total number of incidents it was called in to help with over that period.<\/p>\n<p>And due to the urgency of securing healthcare during the coronavirus pandemic, the NCSC has been helping the NHS to secure itself against cyberattacks.<\/p>\n<p>That includes performing threat hunting on 1.4 million NHS endpoints in an effort to detect potentially suspicious activity and scanning over one million NHS IP addresses to detect\u202fcybersecurity weaknesses.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The second half of the year for us, as it has for everyone else, has been dominated by the response to COVID,&#8221; said\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/the-uks-cybersecurity-agency-is-getting-a-new-boss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lindy Cameron<\/a>, CEO of the NCSC.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What we&#8217;ve done as an organization is really pivot towards the health sector to try and give them the best support we can in thinking about their cyber<\/p>\n<p>The NCSC also helped roll out\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/cybersecurity-uk-could-build-an-automatic-national-defence-system-says-gchq-chief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Active Cyber Defence<\/a>\u202fservices, including Web Check, Mail Check, and protective DNS, to 235 front-line health bodies across the UK, including NHS Trusts to help protect them against\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/what-is-phishing-how-to-protect-yourself-from-scam-emails-and-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">phishing attacks<\/a>\u202fand other threats.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve taken our active cyber-defense portfolio and pivoted it towards the health sector with 230 health bodies using our active cyber defense. That&#8217;s all part of the support we&#8217;ve given to NHS Digital to help them help the health sector,&#8221; Dr. Ian Levy, NCSC technical director, told ZDNet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re stepping up our support quite significantly,&#8221; he continued, adding: &#8220;Obviously it&#8217;s still for individual trusts to protect themselves along with NHS Digital and ourselves, but we&#8217;re really trying to take them the knowledge about the threat and actioning support in the sector at large&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>More than 160 instances of high-risk vulnerabilities have been shared with NHS Trusts during this year while the NCSC has also had to deal with over 200 incidents related to the UK&#8217;s coronavirus response,\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/russian-hackers-are-targeting-coronavirus-scientists-with-phishing-and-malware-attacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including Russian cyber espionage targeting\u202fcoronavirus vaccine development<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 200 coronavirus-related incidents make up a significant chunk of the total number of 723 cyberattacks involving almost 1,200 victims that the NCSC has helped deal with during the course of the past year, a figure up from 658 in the previous year \u2013 and the highest number of incidents since the NCSC was set up. It&#8217;s also a number that&#8217;s likely to continue rising as cybercriminals get more ambitious.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The expertise of the NCSC, as part of GCHQ, has been invaluable in keeping the country safe.
