FireEye has historically been one of the most prominent consultants to investigate attacks against large organizations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and government entities. By targeting FireEye, the threat actors potentially had gained access to sensiti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ve information from the US Government and enterprise giants across all industries. FireEye is still work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ing to find the real threat actors\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">they believe are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0responsible for the breach, but many industry experts and sources at the FBI have pointed fingers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0at the Russian-backed hacking\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">group<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0APT29.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:400}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"http:\/\/45.33.92.219\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/secp.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12231\" src=\"http:\/\/45.33.92.219\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/secp.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"542\" \/><\/a>On Sunday,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fireeye.com\/blog\/threat-research\/2020\/12\/evasive-attacker-leverages-solarwinds-supply-chain-compromises-with-sunburst-backdoor.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">FireEye provided an update<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0stating th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">at the campaign started as early as Spring 2020 and included significantly more victims than just themselves. They were able to identify a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">trojanized<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0SolarWinds Orion update, which they named SUNBURST, as the breach origin. Between March\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">And<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0June of this y<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ear (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Solarwinds<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Orion update versions 2019.4 through 2020.2.1), the threat actors inserted malicious code<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. They<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0digitally signed updates to the SolarWinds Orion Platform before posting them on SolarWinds\u2019 official website. The US Cybersecurity and Infrastruc<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ture Security Agency (CISA)\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cyber.dhs.gov\/ed\/21-01\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">published a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">directive<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0soon after FireEye\u2019s update, requiring all federal civilian agencies to review their networks for indicators of compromise (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">IoCs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">) and disconnect any runnin<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">g SolarWinds Orion servers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:400}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">SolarWinds\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">requests<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0that their customers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0update their Orion installations to 2020.2.1 HF 1 as quickly as possible to mitigate the compromised components. Additional<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ly, they plan to release version 2020 2.1 HF 2 on Tuesday<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0which will replace the compromised components and \u201cprovide several additional security enhancements.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:400}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">upply chain attacks that target vendors\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">as a way to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0reach the intended victims have grown incre<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">asingly popular in recent years,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">most<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ly thanks to their ability to stay hidden for a significant amount of time.
